Narcissists feel deflated when faced with the sobering truth that they’re ordinary. So they engineer things to confirm their “special” status.
Narcissists are addicted to feeling special. And must get their fix. Otherwise their self esteem takes a massive hit.
This explains many of their unusual behaviours. So when you learn what narcissists do to feel special, you better understand their thoughts, behaviours, and motivations.
Here’s some things narcissists do to feel special. You might recognise a few of these…

Long Words And Jargon
Some narcissists learn long words just to feel special. They think they make them appear intelligent, and on a higher plane to everybody else.
The problem is that narcissists often over use their “power words”. And are obvious in their attempts to impress.
The narcissist might not have a full grasp of the word. Because their motivation is to impress, rather than have a true appreciation for its meaning. So they may cringingly misuse these words, thinking they sound clever.
In their jobs, narcissists love work speak. And like Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam, they may vomit a load of buzz words and jargon that makes no sense. Just to sound important.
“Seeing as how the VP is such a VIP, shouldn’t we keep the PC on the QT? ‘Cause if it leaks to the VC he could end up MIA, and then we’d all be put out in KP”
VIP
Talking of VIP, narcissists are often suckers for VIP upgrades and platinum memberships. They often make less than savvy purchasing decisions, just to feel special.
Yes we all like to be pampered from time to time. But this isn’t the focus for the narcissist. They’re happy with a gold card, badge, or other trinket, that tells them how special they are. And bonus points if it tells others.
Narcissists pay for kudos, rather than service. Which makes them a salesman’s dream.
Status Symbols
Narcissists love status symbols that scream to the world “I’m special”. So they may pay more than they can afford for designer clothes, accessories, high performance cars, houses, etc.
The problem is that they often get into massive debt, just to appear special. And may ruin their finances in the process.
Some narcissists are tempted by fraud and gambling to fund their extravagant lifestyles. But the wheels inevitably fall off, because they always role the dice one time too many.
Gym, Sunbeds, Salon
Some narcissists spend an enormous amount of time and money in gyms, solariums, and salons. And their focus is on making themselves look special. Because there’s no point feeling special if no one can tell by looking at them.
Narcissists don’t visit the gym for health reasons. They want to look good. And they want everybody to notice. So they focus on their “glamour muscles”, and skip cardio and leg day. Because if no one can see the results, why bother?
Narcissists are often tempted to shortcut their fitness goals by using steroids. And some abuse them so bad, they end up looking 10 years older. And may eventually suffer with health issues later in life.
Cosmetic Surgery
Some narcissists use cosmetic surgery to look special. Because it requires little effort, just money.
Many narcissists become addicted to cosmetic surgery. Because they get excited by the compliments and the results. So they keep going until eventually they resemble an alien lizard.
But narcissists can’t admit they’ve gone too far. Or that they look worse than when they started. Because they’re NEVER wrong. So they delude themselves that they look great. And who’s got the heart to tell them otherwise?
Spiritual And Religious
Some narcissists elevate themselves by becoming deeply engrained in religion and spirituality. And they’re often involved in spiritual and religious one-upmanship. Because everything’s a competition to them.
Narcissists often assume the role of the mouth piece of God. Which makes them God-like by proxy. They believe that their words and actions are representations of the almighty. And that they should be respected as such. Causing them to swagger around, fantasizing that they’re the divine ruler of the universe.
Mysticism
In a similar way, some narcissists bestow themselves a special status by becoming involved in mysticism. They may for example claim that they can see into the future, or speak to dead people – these are real life examples!
Some narcissists are drawn to tarot card reading, astrology, mediumship etc. Because they fantasize that this gives them special powers, which elevates them above the rest of humanity.
Inconvenience People
Most neuro-typicals don’t like to put people out unnecessarily. But narcissists do, because it makes them feel special. In a narcissists mind, the more they inconvenience people, the more special they feel.
I’ve worked in the mental health services for many years. And narcissists are notorious for having melt downs and feeling “suicidal” on a Friday afternoon. Because it’s the most inconvenient time for staff.
Narcissists may also make unusual requests at restaurants and other hospitalities. Just to put the staff out.
This is why some narcissist celebrities have unusual riders. They get off on someone spending all day laboriously picking out the green Smarties, just to appease their whim.
Illnesses
Narcissists love the special treatment of being “ill”. And many have invisible illnesses that flair up at convenient times.
Many narcissists suffer with unprovable illnesses such as bad backs, arthritis, fibromyalgia etc. And take great joy in gaining peoples help and sympathy whenever they feel like it.
Some narcissists even fake conditions like chest pains. Because they know it gets them rushed to hospital for treatment. Greeted by numerous medical professionals, falling over themselves to treat them.
High Status Jobs
Some narcissists feel special because of their high status jobs. They may work in the Police, armed forces, medicine, politics, the clergy, management etc. Narcissists love uniforms!
Uniforms make narcissists feel special and powerful. Like wearing Superman’s cape. And they love to parade around, feeling important. Which is why some wear their work uniforms on their days off!
Lies
Most narcissists are liberal with the truth. But some take the biscuit.
They lie almost constantly about their past glories. Which may include celebrities they allegedly know. Important jobs they once held. Sporting achievements. Etc. And the older they get, the greater they were.
Narcissists lie to impress others. But they often lie so much that they believe them themselves. And this reinforces their delusions that they’re special.
Befriend Caring And Giving People
Narcissists feel special by surrounding themselves with caring and giving people. It’s good to know nice people, but narcissists have a different motive.
Narcissists delude themselves that these caring people treat them well because they’re special. And not because this is how they treat everyone.
They may fantasize that this caring person is their PA, or maybe a fan. And this strengthens their delusions that they’re special.
Leech From Special People
Narcissists often associate with high ranking people. Because in their mind their special status rubs off onto them.
They might befriend their boss at work. Then swagger around like they own the place. Or bend over backwards to charm wealthy high status people.
Narcissists love knowing important people. Because they feel important by association. Even if they’re just casual acquaintances.
Surround Themselves With The Lower Ranks
But narcissists don’t want to feel inferior to high ranking people all the time. So they may bless the commoners with their divine presence. These are people they consider less well off, less attractive, and less intelligent than themselves.
The beauty of lower status people is that the narcissist can swagger around them as top dog. Exuding greatness. You see, there’s nothing like being around “inferior” people when you want to feel special!

Why Narcissists Have Affairs
This whole article in its entirety is so spot on, I felt I was reliving a life I’ve been trying to escape from for 30 years. All info is perfect. My advice…run for the hills, your life will be altered forever.
I’ve spent way too many years curiously learning and confirming everything I had been thru making it NEVER ENDING. just run for the hills is my advice.
C.
Yep, run for the hills. Because they rarely improve.
So what’s so wrong with taking a run along the beach and lying down on the sand when you’ve run yourself ragged, taking your dog for a walk in the park (or, if it’s my dog Pinky, don’t walk when you can run and don’t run when you can gallop!), having a night at home with your best female girl friends, experimenting with the latest beauty products, reading a good book, enjoying some of your interests and hobbies or learning a skill which you’ve always wanted to try. Are those all things passĂ©?
To a narcissist, probably.
But, when I got to the paragraph after the title, “Inconvenience People”, I thought, damn! I should have already seen that coming! My suspected narcissist did that several times each and every day. And complained to the boss that I wasn’t doing enough to “support” her. I’ve known others who do this in a more covert way. Like the co-worker who cried a lot.
But I wonder about those who try to feel special because of illness. If they’re lying about their illness, I could understand. But what if it was a very serious, very painful illness and/or maybe even terminal. My guess is that they will rail and complain about their misfortune while milking the situation for all that it’s worth!
