Do you have a boss that’s difficult, controlling and manipulative? Do they love themselves, and make EVERYTHING revolve around them?
Then your boss could be a narcissist!
This isn’t surprising. MANY bosses are narcissists. Narcissists are attracted to power and control. So they naturally gravitate towards leadership positions.

Narcissist Bosses Don’t Admit They’re Wrong
A narcissist boss rarely admits fault. Narcissists like to create the delusion they’re perfect. So it’s rare they hold their hands up and admit fault.
They often think that admitting being wrong is a sign of weakness. So they cover them up as best they can.
This puts a lot of needless pressure on them. Sometimes it’s easier to admit fault, and move on. But they often don’t realise this.
Narcissist Bosses “Blame Shift”
To hide their mistakes, narcissist bosses often blame others. Even when it’s obviously their fault.
They distort what really happened, or use twisted logic, and place someone else in the firing line.
Narcissists often have a designated scapegoat they blame for everything. They usually target the quieter and more conscientious workers that won’t argue back.
Narcissist Bosses Bark Orders
Rather than “asking”, narcissists like to boss people around and bark orders. Narcissist bosses like to throw their weight around and show who’s top dog.
They’re not so interested in creating a pleasant working environment. They’re more interested in proving who’s king of the castle. Or serving their own needs in some other way.
Narcissist bosses don’t usually see themselves as a co-ordinator. They see themselves as in charge and superior.
Subtle Digs
Narcissist bosses like to give subtle digs to let you know your place. If challenged, they often claim they were “just joking”. They may also accuse you of being “too sensitive”.
It’s often a good idea to ignore these comments, and pretend they weren’t said. Narcissists often repeat these comments in the future, if they know they get to you.
Always Fault Finding
Narcissistic bosses are less concerned with their employees doing a good job, and more concerned with finding fault.
They LOVE it when they can criticise someone. Then they can put them down to lift themselves up. It’s not about the job, it’s about superiority.

Reprimand In Front Of The Whole Team
Narcissist bosses don’t go for the “quiet word” route. They often wait until EVERYONE is around before giving a dressing down.
Narcissists like to display their power in front of as many people as possible. This helps bolster their delusions of superiority. They don’t give much thought to your feelings. Or staff morale.
Over Focus On Paperwork
Narcissist bosses often focus MASSIVELY on paperwork being correct. Even if this is at the expense of the actual work.
They’re usually more interested in proving they’re good at their work. Rather than actually being good at it.
Paper work is often used to create the illusion they’re good at their job. Even when things are falling apart.
Take The Credit For EVERYTHING
Narcissistic bosses don’t pass credit when credit’s due. Everything good is because of them. And they happily bask in the glory, even if it’s not their doing.
But everything bad is someone else’s fault. And they’re quick to pass the buck. They like to have the best of both worlds!
Narcissist Bosses Have “Flying Monkeys”
Narcissist bosses often befriend one or two staff members to be their spies. They act as their eyes and ears. And they’ll often cover for each other.
Their flying monkeys are fed a few crumbs as compensation. But the narcissist boss will happily throw them under a bus when the need arises.
They’re Hierarchical
Narcissist bosses bow down to those “above” them in the company hierarchy. But look down their nose at those beneath them. They don’t have a sense of “all men are equal”.
You’ll often see them treating people very differently, depending on their status within the company. Yes we all do to some degree. But narcissists take this to extremes.
Final Thoughts
If you have a narcissist boss, there isn’t a great deal you can do. Narcissists rarely change their ways.
If they’re reprimanded by someone above them, they may change. But only temporarily. They’ll be on their best behaviour for a while, but usually revert back to their narcissistic ways. It’s who they are.
If you’re experiencing problems with a narcissist boss, it’s a good idea to look elsewhere for employment. Narcissist bosses can damage your mental health. And can even take their toll on your physical health.
They strip away your confidence and you self esteem. Leaving you anxious and depressed. Either get out whilst you can, or learn how to handle them better. They’re NEVER going to be easy, but you CAN help matters by learning more about them.
