It’s rarely discussed, but narcissistic relationships can leave people with gut issues. Which then leads to a whole array of other physical and mental issues.
As well as digesting your food, your gut is known as your second brain. And it’s in constant communication with you. So when things aren’t right, you feel it.
Gut health makes a massive difference to your overall health and well being. Which I’ve personally experienced, having had gut issues myself.
In this article I’ll discuss how narcissistic abuse causes gut issues. The impact it has on your health. Plus how I eliminated stomach issues after my narcissist relationship…

How Narcissistic Abuse Causes Gut Issues
People in narcissist relationships usually spend most of their time in flight or fight mode. Due to the narcissists erratic and confusing behaviours. Plus all their demands.
This releases cortisol, adrenaline, and other stress hormones into our body. Which increases inflammation, and harms our digestion.
This can lead to IBS symptoms, such as diarrhoea and constipation. And can harm the gut micro biome. Which helps you digest food, and protects you from more harmful bacteria.
The stress from narcissistic abuse may also drive us into behaviours which harm our gut. We might drink more alcohol, binge eat, and eat bad foods for example.
This is an attempt to sooth ourselves. When we’re in survival mode, our immediate needs often take precedence over our long term health.

Impact Of Gut Issues
At one time, gut issues massively impacted me. I would regularly get diarrhoea and feel bloated. Which are typical “IBS” symptoms.
What I didn’t realise is that these gut issues also affected my mental health. Massively.
After I solved my gut issues, I realised that they contributed towards anxiety, lower mood, and less energy. Once I made the changes I’m about to tell you, I couldn’t believe how much better I felt mentally.
Anxiety was significantly reduced. My mood was elevated. And my energy levels went through the roof. Here’s how I did it…
How I Dealt With Gut Issues
Probiotics
Probiotics made a massive difference to my gut health. But only after I found the right one for me.
Probiotics work by introducing good bacteria into our gut. Which aid digestion, by helping us break down foods that our gut can’t. And over time, these good bacteria replace the more harmful bacteria.
We all have different microbiomes. So what works for one person might not work as well for others. So it’s worth experimenting to see which probiotics help you the most.
I tried sauerkraut, which my body seemed to reject. So I tried Kombucha, which helped a little. But the one that really made a difference for me was Kefir.
Kefir is a fermented milk. Which is like a cross between milk and yoghurt. And it contains loads of good bacteria. I found that my digestion massively improved, just days after taking it.
Reduce Processed Foods
Most processed foods contain preservatives. Which help extend shelf life. But this comes at a cost.
Preservatives harm our gut micro biome. Because their function is to kill bacteria, to keep food fresh. So if you reduce the processed foods you eat, you reduce gut bacteria killing preservatives in your stomach.
Instead I now eat more natural foods that don’t contain additives. A little mantra I use is “Eat food God makes, not food man makes”.
So I largely stick to natural foods like meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, and nuts. And avoid packaged items made in factories.
Gluten Free Diet
This isn’t for everyone, and perhaps more unique to me. But a gluten free diet seemed to be the final piece in my jigsaw for good gut health.
It was difficult at first to cut out bread, pasta, pastry, etc. But for me it was worth the effort. I’ve now been gluten free for several years, and I’ll never go back.
Not only did my digestion improve, but so did my mood and energy. I also had the bonus of virtually eliminating psoriasis and nasal congestion issues that I’d had since childhood. Plus my skin has never looked better.
Reduce Stress
Since stress harms our gut, reducing it logically helps. So try staying more in the “here and now”. Don’t worry about things that might happen in the future. Or dwell on things you can’t change from the past.
I made it my mission to distance myself from toxic people. Because they bring a lot stress to the table. And frankly, why should I let them do this to me?
Slow deep breathing helps when in stressful situations. Just take a few slow deep breaths in through your nose, and out through your mouth. And you should notice an immediate calming effect.
I also found that regular meditation reduced my stress levels. Because it gave me valuable “time out”. Plus it got me used to not constantly doing things.
Meditation needn’t be long and complicated. Check out my free guided meditation session bellow, to get you started…
Final Thoughts
You gut health is vitally important to your overall health. Both physical and mental. So if you have issues, address them.
Don’t let gut issues linger. Visit your Doctor, and do some research. Learn about your personal triggers. And don’t rest until you solved them.
Once you’ve solved gut issues, you’ll discover many positive knock on effects. And your life will dramatically improve. So it’s well worth the effort. Don’t let the narcissist drain you any longer. Take back your mental and physical vitality.

My brother bought a big a jar of Kimchi. My poor aunt had to smell it when she had open the fridge. Yuck! But some people like it! If you want to try it, maybe you’d want to put a pick on your nose?
I prefer to stick to Kefir!
