How Narcissists Avoid The Truth

How Narcissists Avoid The Truth

Posted on

Narcissists aren’t interested in the truth. They’re interested in pushing forward their agendas. Or proving themselves right – even when they’re not.

You may catch them red handed, but they still deny things. Even in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Narcissists rarely approach anything with an open mind, seeking answers. They look for the answers they want. The one that proves them right, or pushes forward their agenda.

Narcissists try their damnedest to shape the truth for their own needs. So they develop strategies to avoid the truth. And create their own.

Here’s some of the ways narcissists avoid the truth…

Cause An Argument

Narcissists love causing arguments to get away from the truth. Arguments provide the perfect smoke screen.

Rational discussion and logic is the best way to uncover the truth. But narcissists don’t want the truth to come out. Because it reveals what they’re up to. So they turn things into a messy argument. Then no one knows what’s going on.

Narcissists have many ways of causing arguments. They’re the masters! They might bring something up they know you’re sensitive about. Call you names. Or attack you for something completely unrelated.

Once an argument breaks out, you can forget all rational discussion. And that’s just fine with the narcissist.

Rally the Troops

Narcissists give their distorted side of the story to as many people as they can. And convince them you’re wrong, crazy etc. Then sit back and let others do the work for them.

Narcissists are masters of bending the truth. Just enough to fit the narrative they want. And make you wrong, and them right.

They get as many people on board as they can to fight their corner. And use as many of the following tactics as they can to paint a different picture to reality.

Claim They Don’t Remember

Narcissists are notorious for claiming they don’t remember things. And conveniently it’s always something they’ve done wrong, or something which proves their current argument flawed. And their insistence they don’t remember, puts a stop to proceedings.

But when it comes to that £2 they lent you 300 years ago, they have a memory that would put an elephant to shame!

Accuse You Of A Poor memory

Another tactic to avoid the truth is to accuse you of having a bad memory. So you MUST have remembered things wrong.

It’s a no lose tactic for the narcissist. Because they doggedly stick to this narrative, even when you clearly recollect events. And because they won’t budge, they can’t lose. Unless you provide conclusive evidence, which is often impossible.

And even if you do provide evidence, they turn things around. And accuse you of setting them up or not trusting them.

It’s not unheard of for narcissists to deliberately move things so you can’t find them. Or lie, to help them convince you of your poor memory.

This is a form of gaslighting. And once they have you convinced, they have free reign to rewrite history. And with that power, they can NEVER be wrong.

Accuse You Of Being Angry

Another narcissist staple is to accuse someone of being angry at them. Even if you’re displaying no signs of anger.

The narcissist attempts to equate disagreement with anger. Even when you’re perfectly calm and rational.

The narcissist wants you to stop and question yourself. And they WANT you to be angry. There’s nothing like a heated exchange to muddy the waters.

The narcissist also knows that good old conscientious you doesn’t want to appear angry. So they shift the focus of the argument to whether you’re angry with them. And whilst you’re busy defending yourself, the truth is neglected.

Focus On Your Reaction

A narcissist might be acting supremely selfish. Or they might wind you up for hours. When you finally snap, they don’t want to talk about what provoked you. They want to talk about your reaction.

By isolating your reaction, you seem unreasonable. Like you reacted for no apparent reason. You must be crazy!

No matter how much you try to discuss what provoked you, the narcissist returns to how you reacted. “There was no need to shout like that.”

By focussing on your reaction, the narcissist avoids what they did to provoke you. And that’s exactly what they want to do.

Smear

If a narcissist feels someone’s on to them, they don’t apologise and change their ways. They smear them.

The narcissist attempts to discredit this person as much as they can, so you don’t believe them. They lie or exaggerate their faults. And repeat this over and over again. Drumming into your head why this person can’t be trusted. And unfortunately this tactic often works.

A narcissist would rather you fall out with friends or family, than admit the truth. If they sense someone you know might call them out, they smear and discredit them.

Narcissists Circular Arguments

Narcissists often dance around the topic, rather than face it. They change the subject. Pretend to misunderstand you. Go off on a tangent. And make it difficult to discuss the matter in hand.

After a while of going round in circles, most people get exhausted and give up. And that’s what the narcissist wants.

This can be extremely frustrating. You want to get your point across, but they won’t allow it. It’s draining, and almost impossible to pin them down.

Convince Themselves

Narcissists often convince themselves of their fake “truth”. If they believe what they’re saying, they’re more convincing. And the logic is that if they believe their lies, you’re more likely to.

I’ve seen narcissists become highly agitated, blaming others of falsely accusing them. And acting highly insulted. Even when they knew they weren’t being truthful.

Surround Themselves With Enablers

Narcissists like to surround themselves with enablers who agree with them. Remember, narcissists aren’t interested in the truth, only being right. So they don’t care for “keeping it real”.

Even if someone in their circle disagrees with them, they’re usually in the minority. And are drowned out by the majority. So their voice is seldom heard.

Play The Victim

If the narcissist feels your homing in on the truth, they have one final ace up their sleeve. Play the victim.

They know you’re kind and conscientious. And if they play the pity card, you’ll go easy on them. You might even back down.

The narcissist might cry and talk about how stressed they are. Talk about their mental health. Or fake some other “illness”.

Narcissists know it’s difficult for empathetic people to turn the screw on someone who’s suffering. So they concoct some kind of “problem”. And now you feel too bad to continue your pursuit for the truth. When all else fails, this is a great tactic for them to fall back on.

Final Thoughts

Most narcissists will do anything to avoid the truth, if that truth shows them as anything less than perfect. Or highlights their manipulative ways.

Narcissists have delusions of superiority and perfection. And they fight hard to maintain these delusions. Even in the face of overwhelming evidence.

You’ll often see narcissists shifting between these tactics until they find the one that works. Even if it contradicts what they were previously saying.

Narcissists don’t care about fair play. And they don’t let the truth get in the way of winning, and being right. They fight dirty to win. Even if it’s just a hollow victory.
