Are Narcissists Happy?

Posted on

In my experience, narcissists are unhappy people. Some may fake a happy exterior. But deep down they’re unhappy and unfulfilled.

There’s several reasons why narcissists are unhappy. Here’s my thoughts on why narcissists are generally unhappy…

Narcissists Need Almost Constant Attention

Most narcissists need almost constant attention and validation. And this requires other people. Narcissists need attention more than most. Which is great source of anxiety and unhappiness.

Narcissists don’t like being vulnerable. And needing someone leaves them exposed. Because someone can take away what they need. So the narcissists is caught in a double bind.

They need people, but they don’t want anyone to know this. In their minds, if they can hide it, they can’t be exploited. So they pretend they don’t need people, whilst finding ingenious ways of gaining attention.

I imagine this is difficult, consuming, and worrying. Especially when attention is running low.

EVERYTHING Is A Competition

Narcissists have very shaky self esteem, and are hierarchical. They’re either above or beneath someone. There’s no equality.

Narcissists are aware of when people are “better” than them at anything. And they don’t like it one bit.

It’s obviously unrealistic to be better than everyone at everything. So it creates a ridiculous amount of pressure on narcissists. Always competing to be the best at everything.

Narcissists are constantly measuring themselves against everybody. Their lives must feel like a huge series of failures.

Narcissists Are Easily Bored

Most narcissists are easily bored. And are rarely content with the simple things in life. As well as being bottomless pits for attention, they’re also bottomless pits for drama and excitement.

Most people are happy when things are peaceful and harmonious. But not narcissists. They find this boring and unfulfilling. They need a buzz, drama, and excitement most of the time.

But life is not like this. Most of us need to work, cook, clean, and look after ourselves and others. Narcissists find this a real drag. Much more than the rest of us do.

Narcissists Struggle Keeping Friends

Because narcissists are narcissistic, many struggle maintaining long term friendships. People often make their excuses and cut them off once they see what they’re really like.

Many narcissists lives are filled with rejection and abandonment. Most of them worry about losing the friends they’ve managed to keep hold of.

Couple this with their need for almost constant attention, and it’s a life of fear and worry. It’s no wonder they become possessive and controlling.

Narcissists Don’t Fully Connect With People

Narcissists never quite connect with other people. It’s like they’re on a slightly different wavelength.

They lack empathy, so they don’t think about others thoughts or feelings. And narcissists barely listen to anything others say. They’re usually plotting and planning, or thinking what to say next.

This disconnect makes them feel sad and lonely at times. Even when surrounded by people.

Create Enemies For Themselves

Throughout their lives, narcissists create many enemies. They wrong so many people, it’s inevitable they gather an army of haters.

Ultimately, narcissists want to be liked and admired. Even though it might not always appear that way.

Most narcissists are saddened by such mass hate directed towards them. They might not admit it. Or they might pretend to revel in it. But deep down it cuts them like a knife.

If a narcissist has lived in a particular area for a long time, they probably live in fear of bumping into someone they’ve wronged in the past. Which is why some narcissists periodically move to different places.

Narcissists Live A Lie

Narcissists essentially live a lie. They usually have a “nice” persona and a narcissistic persona. Their nice side is reserved for people they want to impress, such as their boss, a new love interest, or someone they want to make friends with.

The narcissists true self is their narcissistic side. But they hide this most of the time, because they know no one would go near them. Many learn this through experience.

So they spend most of their time living a lie. Faking the nice act and playing a role. It’s only when they get close to someone they show the horrors of their narcissistic side. And even then, they know they can’t display the full horror show.

Imagine having to act like someone else for most of your life. Because you know people will abandon you if you act like your true self. This can’t feel good.

Reliant On Drugs Or Alcohol

Because of their issues, many narcissists turn to drink and drugs to escape. They want to escape from themselves as much as the world around them.

Narcissists hate self reflecting. Because their thoughts may reveal they’re less than perfect. And they can’t have that. So they drink and take drugs to get away from their own thoughts. They’re a handy, albeit damaging tool.

Drink and most drugs cause depression as a side effect. Especially when used long term.

Final Thoughts

Narcissists are usually unhappy people. Their life is a desperate search for attention and validation. Which isn’t always forthcoming. Especially when they push people away.

Narcissists are NEVER happy with what they’ve got. So they keep pushing for more. And this endless pursuit means happiness never arrives. Because once they get what they want, they want something else.

Most narcissists feel empty and unfulfilled. Even if they have a loving family, a great job, and plenty of cash.

On the surface, they paint a picture of someone happy and doing well in life. (Unless they want to play the victim). But inside they’re tortured souls. Always unfulfilled. And always wanting more.
