If you’ve spent time on social media, then it’s likely you’ve seen videos of narcissist Police in action. They may be brutal when making arrests. Harass civilians for no good reason. Show blatant racism. And even tackle the elderly and disabled.
I’m not saying that all Police are bad. Far from it. But the role IS a magnet for narcissists. And I’ll bet that they’re significantly overrepresented.
In this article I’ll discuss why narcissists join the Police. This will help you understand their motivations. And help you understand why many βrogueβ Police act as they do.
Here’s some reasons why narcissists join the Police…

Power
The first obvious reason is power. Narcissists LOVE power. And the Police have it in spades. Unlike most jobs, they don’t have to spend years working their way up to achieve it. They get it from day one.
Most people bow down to the police, and do as they’re told. Because they don’t want to incur their wrath. So narcissist Police get away with talking down to people, and telling them what to do. Which is a power dynamic narcissists dream about.
Narcissist Police also have the power of the law behind them. And can antagonise people with stop and search, and threats of arrest. And when it comes to a situation where it’s the Police’s word against a civilians, the Police almost always win.
Depending on the jurisdiction, the Police may carry weaponry. And many narcissists are fixated on weaponry. Because they’re a symbol of power, and can be used to dominate and intimidate.
With all this power at their disposal, it’s no wonder narcissists are attracted to the Police. And it’s also no surprise that there’s many reported incidents of Police abuse of this power. Which begs the question, how much abuse of power goes unreported?
Control
Narcissists love to control people around them. And tell them what to do. But this can be difficult in normal every day life. But not when you’re a Police Officer.
You’ve probably seen countless videos of Police asking civilians for their name. And the civilian legally refusing to give it.
A narcissist Police Officer can’t stand this challenge to their authority. And instead of saying βfair enoughβ, they threaten arrest. And in extreme cases, brandish their weaponry and haul them in.
The narcissist expects everyone to bow down to their demands. No matter how unreasonable. And when they don’t, they won’t let it lie. Because they need to assert their control.
When their control is challenged, narcissist Police make sure there’s only one winner. Which is why they make needless arrests when at loggerheads with the public.
Drama
Narcissism is a defence mechanism that prevents pain. And they largely achieve this by walling themselves off from their emotions. But this leaves them feeling flat inside. And they become easily bored and restless.
To compensate, narcissists look for drama. Which is why they cause trouble when things are peaceful and harmonious.
Whilst neuro-typical Police Officers may want to get through their shift unscathed, narcissists want all the smoke. Which is why they sometimes wind up members of the public to cause trouble. And deliberately provoke people during tense situations.
Narcissists Want To Be A Hero
Some narcissists get their fix from helping others. Not because they want to see justice served. But because they can bask in the glory of their heroism.
A narcissist in the Police might receive praise from their colleagues, the public, and even the press. And this gives the narcissist Police Officer a nice boost of supply. Because it gives them the external validation they so desperately crave.
Public Façade
Although narcissists have disordered personalities, many work hard to create the illusion that they’re normal functioning members of society. And joining the Police helps with this.
Most narcissists desperately want to be admired by the general public. Because this reaffirms their delusions of superiority. And gives them validation. So they try to convey the image that they’re honourable, kind, and caring.
Joining the Police helps narcissists raise their public profile. Their neighbours see them striding out every morning in their crisply pressed uniform with shiny buttons. And many look up to them, purely because of their job role. Allowing them to fool them into thinking they’re decent trustworthy people.
Joining the Police opens doors for narcissists. Because most people automatically trust them. So they let down their guard. Allowing the narcissists to take advantage if they want to.
Narcissists Can Play A Role
Narcissists are like blank canvasses. They don’t really have a personality. Their thoughts and opinions are based on what’s advantageous at the time. Rather than any firm beliefs. That’s why they can flip from extreme left wing politics to extreme right. Depending on how they’re doing in life. Or who they want to impress.
Narcissists are more comfortable playing roles than being themselves. In fact this is the foundation of narcissism. They’re ashamed of their true selves. So they create a false persona who’s everything they’re not.
Some narcissists become great actors. Because they spend most of their life playing various roles.
Joining the Police allows narcissists to play the role of Police officer. And speak in an authoritative voice, whilst using Police jargon. This creates the illusion that they’re a person of substance. Rather than a shallow nobody.
Less Accountability
Narcissists avoid accountability for their actions as much as they can. And joining the Police helps this.
If they flash their badge when pulled over for speeding, they’re likely to be let off. And they’re likely to use their contacts in the Police to get them off the hook for other misdemeanour’s.
And even if they’re caught for a crime, it’s likely to be a reduced penalty due to their years of service. Whilst they tearfully blame the stresses of the job.
If someone sees a Police officer commit a crime, they’re less likely to report it. Because they’d have to report it to their colleagues. And it’s well known that Police βlook after their ownβ.
People naturally fear reprisals if the information gets back to the narcissist Police officer. So in many cases, they look the other way. Because it’s not worth the hassle.
Final Thoughts
Policing offers many perks for narcissists. More than it does for neuro-typicals. Which is why narcissists are overrepresented in the Police force.
It allows them to look like a person of importance. It gives them power and status. And gives them carte blanche to evade the normal rules of society. And to top it off, they have a lovely uniform that screams authority!
With all these benefits, it’s no wonder narcissists are attracted to Policing. Which is why Police authorities should find ways to screen their applicants before allowing them into the role.
Policing is an important and sensitive field of work. And shouldn’t be dominated by narcissistic personality types. Because they cause as many problems as they solve.
If I had my way they’d be no narcissists in the Police. Because the best Police Officers are the ones who serve the community. Not the ones that serve themselves.

When I called the police on the sociopaths I know, they would tell me things like “Shut up and stop the psycho-babble!” (Typical Narcissistic action. “I could care less about anything you have to say!) Many times it was very reminiscent of the police stop with Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie. The police end up with more of an affinity for the abuser than trying to figure out how to help the victim.
Yes Phillip I saw the video with Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie. My first gut reaction was that Brian Launrie had convinced her she had OCD, and would wind her up by treading muddy boots into the van. And probably wound her up in many other ways. He then stayed calm when the Police arrived, making her look like the irrational one. I wasn’t sure whether the Police had misread the situation, or were deliberately enabling him. But you’d hope that they’d be trained to at least consider the possibility he was an abuser. Especially when he was telling them that she was crazy.
I enjoy your posts and videos. They are so βon the money!β.
Iβm not sure if you reside in America or UK? I happen to be in Sydney Australia and this post of yours is exactly the way the Police in this state behaved when they had power over the populace during our Covid lock downs. To be honest you write as if you were actually here during lock down.!Their brutality was shocking and I have totally lost respect for each and every one of them. I personally experienced this rude, crude and bullying behaviour and have taken my option to engage a Lawyer to sort this out.. Peace and love .
Thanks Dee. I’m in the UK. But I see lots of videos of Police behaving badly on Twitter and other places on the internet.
Many situations seem to be a stand off. And even if the Police are wrong, they don’t budge, because they need to “win” and maintain their control. But please don’t think that all Police are narcissists. Because there are many good Police out there too!
Covid seemed like a field day for narcissists in general. They seemed to swing to the extremes of both ends of the argument. Some were saying that everyone should be vaccinated, whether they like it or not. And others were saying you’re a mindless sheep if you get the vaccine. But the one thing that tied them all together was that they all thought they were 100% right, and that everybody should do what they say!
Mindless sheep here! Perhaps it’s because of having worked in the health sector. I’m morbidly afraid of getting sick. Because of the corona virus, I’ve been feeling for the police who have to enforce the rules such as wearing a mask and keeping their distance, especially when I read a news article where a member of the public spat on a police officer. If I’d been in his shoes, I would have been tempted to tasered him!
Yes, the Police definitely got a rough ride ride during the pandemic. They’re certainly not all narcissists, but they are overrepresented. Personality tests would help reduce this.
Did I read a narcissist becomes a minister?
