Narcissists create a false self as a defence mechanism. And this false self is all powerful, and can’t be hurt.
To achieve this they must detach themselves from their emotions. Because in the narcissists mind, emotions make you weak. However this emotional distancing comes at a cost.
Distancing yourself from your emotions leaves you feeling flat inside. Because you don’t experience the normal spectrum of emotions that you should. Which is why most narcissists crave drama and excitement. They need it to feel alive, because they’re dead inside.

Affairs
Some narcissists get a kick out of risking getting caught cheating. And may enjoy this more than the actual affair itself.
Narcissists take increasingly bigger risks during an affair. At the beginning, the affair itself might be enough to give them a buzz. But soon this feels ordinary, so they must up the ante.
The narcissist may add more affairs to their collection. Have affairs with people who are close to their spouse. Invite their affair to their house, and so on.
Narcissists increase the risk to keep the buzz going. And they can get pretty outrageous before they’re eventually caught. Some narcissists make their affairs public knowledge. With almost everyone aware, except their spouse.
Gambling
Some narcissists become addicted to gambling. And gamble more than they can afford to lose.
Narcissists may recklessly gamble a months wages in a night. Then do the same with their next pay.
These narcissists enjoy the buzz of risking it all. And they don’t learn their lesson, because they get what they want – some feelings. Even if it costs them the shirt off their back.
Narcissists crave to feel something. Even if it’s unpleasant. So they may welcome the roller-coaster of emotions when they lose, just as much as when they win. Which is why they keep losing money. And appear not to learn from their mistakes.
Work Place Risks
Research shows that narcissist CEOs often take greater risks. And whilst it could cost millions when it goes wrong, it can also pay off.
Narcissists are often eternal optimists, because they feel blessed to have good luck. They’re special, and the universe will reward them for this. And this mindset allows them to take bigger risks.
Narcissists in the Police may take risks by provoking the public. Rather than keeping everything calm and orderly. Which explains many videos showing Police Officers being harsh with the public. They want the smoke because they need a fix of drama to get their blood pumping. Even if it increases the risk to their own safety.
Some narcissists may steal or defraud the company they work for. And whilst the financial gains are appreciated, so is the buzz.
Cutting It Fine
Another risk I’ve seen many narcissists take is cutting things fine. For example, if they have a plane to catch, they might leave it until the last minute to set off. Then rush like crazy to get there.
I’ve even suggested to a narcissist to set off sooner, but they refused. Then I had to experience the panic to get there. And the stress of every minor setback.
One narcissist explained to me that she did it because she liked “living on the edge”. Which showed that she got something out of it, even though it stressed her out. This stress made her feel alive. Which is why she was prepared to risk missing her plane.
This behaviour may also explain some narcissists finances. As many are “down to the wire” each month. And never set aside emergency funds. Perhaps they secretly thrive on it.
Dangerous Driving
Many narcissists are reckless drivers. And part of the reason is because they like to cut it fine. But narcissists also take unnecessary risks when they’re not running late.
Narcissists sense of entitlement means that everyone should get out their way. Because the roads were built solely for them. And their sense of superiority means that they over estimate their driving abilities. Plus they enjoy risking it all, and getting their adrenaline pumping.
Drugs And Alcohol
Drugs and alcohol obviously pose health risks. But narcissists feel they were born special. So drugs and alcohol pose little risk to them. Unlike what they do with ordinary mortals.
Narcissists also enjoy the escape and the drama that drugs bring. So in the narcissists world, they’re a risk-free buzz.
This is why many narcissists don’t consider quitting until they’re hit with a serious health warning. And even then it doesn’t always stop them. Maybe they like to live on the edge with their health too.
Final Thoughts
Narcissists take risks because they feel dead inside. So they use them to spice up their life, and experience some feelings.
Most narcissists believe they’re destined to be lucky. So they feel they can keep rolling the dice without ever losing.
Of course, narcissists are bound to come unstuck. But they have a get out.
Rather than take responsibility and learn, they look for someone or something to blame. And if you’re close to the narcissist, then it’s likely to be you.
Once the narcissist is satisfied that the outcome to their risky behaviour wasn’t their fault, they can return to their blissful ignorance. And kid themselves once more that they’re blessed with good luck. And continue rolling the dice.
