You may have noticed that many politicians act strange when out of their political comfort zones. This often happens when they’re interacting with the public, or on TV panel shows.
Something seems โoffโ about them. They look awkward and disconnected, like they don’t belong in the real world. And they come across as fake. In many cases, it’s because they’re narcissists.
I’m willing to bet that narcissists are massively over-represented in politics. And you can probably think of some examples of narcissist politicians.
There’s almost a constant stream of news about politicians and ex-politicians bad behaviours. From embezzlement and bullying, to marital infidelity. And sometimes worse.
Many disgraced politicians are undiagnosed narcissists. And got so big for their boots, that they though they were invincible.
This article discusses why narcissists are attracted to politics. And why they’re so suited to it…

Power
The first obvious draw is power. Narcissists LOVE power. Which is why they’re often the first at work to shoot their hand up for a promotion.
Narcissists are obsessed with hierarchies. And when they walk into a room they instinctively size people up, to see where they rank. And they usually feel entitled to sit near the top, because of their delusions of superiority.
Although politicians are supposed to serve the people, narcissists don’t see it this way. They see it as being in charge. And the area they represent is their property.
They may talk about โserviceโ, but only because that’s what people want to hear. If you watch their actions, the only people narcissist politicians want to serve is themselves.
Narcissists love having an air of importance and authority. With people falling over themselves to help them. And politics gives them this privilege.
In The Spotlight
The more overt narcissists crave the spotlight. And have a pathological need to be centre of attention. So the world of politics is perfect.
Politicians are high profile. They take centre stage with speeches and appearances. Their faces featured on billboards, leaflets and magazines. And they make regular appearances on TV and other media. Politics is all about selling yourself and your message. And you can’t do that hiding in your Mum’s basement.
Narcissists love the attention that politics gives them. Which motivates them to enter the field, and work their way up. Because the higher they climb, the more attention they receive.
Self Promotion
To be a successful politician, you must self promote. And do this tirelessly for years. People low on the narcissistic spectrum may find it hard to blow their own trumpet. But narcissists have no problem selling themselves.
Narcissists believe that success is their birth right. They’re entitled to it. And they feel they’re the only person qualified to solve the worlds problems. So they have an almost unwavering self belief. Especially if they’ve been brought up in privileged backgrounds.
This level of confidence is infectious, and helps many politicians gain popularity. Lets face it, who votes for someone who’s unsure of themselves? How many votes would, โI’ll try my bestโ win?!
Honesty is not sexy. And as noble as is it, it doesn’t capture the imagination. And it doesn’t win votes.
People want to hear exciting grandiose claims. How they’ll make the world a better place. And how they’re the best person to do it.
These pledges win elections, even if they lack substance. So remember to focus on a politicians actual policies, rather than their confident demeanour and bold predictions.
Can Hide Behind Prewritten Speeches
Narcissists are like blank canvasses – empty shells. And they copy personality traits from others, because they have no sense of self.
Pre-written speeches are perfect for narcissists. Because they don’t have to inject much personality. They stand up looking pretty, and read their speech with fake passion and sincerity. Much like an actor.
In life, narcissists are more focussed on appearance than reality. Which is why many get themselves into debt, just to appear more successful than they really are. So they’re happy to let people write speeches for them, and make them look good. Rather than develop this skill themselves.
Narcissists are comfortable taking the credit for other peoples work. And whilst their speech writers and spin doctors work tirelessly behind the scenes, the narcissist basks in the glory. And that suits them fine.
Responsibility Doesn’t Phase Them
A narcissists lack of emotional empathy can be an advantage in politics. At least when it comes to making tough decisions. Because people with empathy find it emotionally draining making decisions that affect so many people. And they worry about the harm their decisions might cause.
Narcissists don’t have this problem. They can condemn half the people to poverty, and still sleep at night. Their only worry is whether the decision affects their own popularity.
This allows them to make difficult decisions with relative ease. And take big risks. However it sometimes means they make rash decisions. With little regard to how they affect others.
Unstable Sense Of Self
Narcissists don’t know who they are. Their thoughts and opinions shift rapidly, depending on what’s advantageous at the time. And this is perfect for politics.
Politicians must tow the party line. And agree with what their party says and does. Or they’re unlikely to progress through the ranks. Narcissists are used to shifting their thoughts and opinions, if it furthers their own agenda.
Some politicians make a career out of flip-flopping their opinions, depending on what’s popular at the time. And if they’re really skilled, they can make it seem like they agree with both sides of the argument at the same time.
Manipulators
Most intelligent narcissists are skilled manipulators. Because they’ve had a life time of practice.
This massively helps in politics. Because not only can they fool the public to win their votes, they can manipulate their colleagues.
Narcissists are at home befriending people who are useful. And comfortable stabbing them in the back if need be. They’re experts at triangulating and playing people against each other, making others look bad, and themselves look good.
Their manipulation skills are also useful when it comes to defending their policies. Narcissists have a life time of experience never admitting they’re wrong. They’re usually experts at blame shifting, distraction, and deception.
Final Thoughts
Sadly, narcissists are suited to the world of politics. And they often thrive. They’re attracted to the power and the glory. And are naturally good salespeople.
However their manipulations and bad behaviours can come back to haunt them. Because there’s only so many times they can roll the dice and get away things. And if they’ve been particularly bad, then their enemies may collaborate to bring them down.
But if they play the political game and prosper, then there’s the potential for big trouble. Because narcissists like to surround themselves with like-minded people who agree with them. And if they take charge of a Government, then empathic politicians are either ousted, or quit in disgust. Leaving a Government teeming with narcissists. And that doesn’t bear thinking about!
A study in the United States and Denmark shows that the more narcissistic someone is, the more likely they are to become involved in politics. Meaning they’re more likely to vote, join demonstrations, contact politicians, and donate money.
So it’s not surprising that some narcissist politicians thrive. They have the backing of fellow narcissists. And if they remain in power long enough, they may recruit more narcissists to work alongside them.
So if you want to reduce the influence of narcissists in politics, then remember to vote. And be careful who you vote for!
