Not all conspiracy theorists are narcissists. And not all narcissists are conspiracy theorists. But research shows a definite correlation between narcissists and conspiracy theories.
These narcissists seem to talk about conspiracies non-stop. Like it’s an obsession. And they speak as if these conspiracies are water tight facts. Despite flimsy evidence. Maybe you’ve witnessed this?
Why are some narcissists so attracted to conspiracy theories? And why do they believe them so staunchly?
Here’s my thoughts on narcissists and conspiracy theories…

Special Club
Generally speaking, narcissists are surprisingly gullible. And it’s often easy to convince them of something, if you tie it in with a compliment.
Some narcissists are seduced by the “special club” that some conspiracies offer. And many conspiracy theorists play on this for support.
They talk about being “woke”. How the non-followers are “sheeple”. And place their believers into a special superior category, that look down on everybody else. What narcissist wouldn’t like this?!
The funny thing is that narcissist conspiracy followers criticise the masses for blindly following narratives. Yet they do the same with the conspiracy theory. As they never question them. Never consider that they may be a lie. And fail to entertain alternative explanations.
Narcissists don’t care about the truth, because they want to be in this special club. So logic and rational thinking takes a back seat.
Narcissists Are Detached From Reality
Another reason narcissists are easily taken in is because they’re detached from reality. Narcissists spend their life convincing themselves that they’re greater than they are. And this requires them to get creative with the realities of life.
Narcissists are rarely as magnificent as they like to believe. So they must delude themselves to keep their grandiose self image alive.
So most narcissists bend reality to fit the narrative they want – that they’re amazing. Which over time warps their world view. Making it easier for them to be convinced of weird and wonderful conspiracies.
Narcissist Paranoia
It’s common for narcissists to suffer with paranoia. And here’s why…
Narcissists are so convinced that the world revolves around them, that they believe it’s plausible that governments and other important institutions are targeting them. Even though they have no significance above the average Joe.
Narcissists fail to appreciate how small they are in the grand scheme of things. Because they have delusions of grandiosity. So they may believe they’re being personally targeted by powerful forces. Which increases their “need” to research conspiracies. Which in turn increases their paranoia.
In some cases, this cycle gets out of hand. And the narcissist can suffer with bouts of psychosis. Which in turn increases their belief in conspiracies. Because they’re so paranoid and out of touch with reality.
Narcissists Assume Everyone Thinks Like Them
It’s natural to assume that everyone thinks like ourselves. We all do it. Which is why narcissists often go undetected.
Since narcissists are controlling and manipulative, it’s natural for them to assume that everyone else is too. Including the “powers that be”.
So they consider it inevitable that everyone in power is out to control and exploit them, using underhanded tactics. Because they’d do the same.
Attention
Some narcissists are so obsessed with conspiracy theories that they constantly bombard social media. And talk about them incessantly to anyone who’ll listen. And a major motivation is attention.
As you probably know, most narcissists need lots of attention. Far more than they average person.
Posting controversial articles and opinions on social media is bound to give them attention. Lots of it. Because it’s unusual, and it stands out. And it attracts others to join in the conversation, which increases their reach.
Most narcissists are hyper aware of how much attention their social media posts gain. And if they find a topic that attracts eyeballs, then they’re all in.
Drama
Most narcissists crave drama. So they often look to ruffle some feathers to provide it. And conspiracy theories are a great tool to achieve this.
The narcissist gets into heated debates with people who don’t believe or agree with their messages. And this actually feeds them. Because to a narcissist, negative attention is better than none.
Narcissists also find people who agree with them. And may build a following.
With an army of followers, they can take on the “enemy” from the safety of their keyboard. Poking, prodding, and provoking them with deliberately controversial posts. Creating more conflict and drama. All from the comfort of their home.
If you see a narcissist using social media this way, then the best thing you can do is ignore them. Because any reaction you give, either good or bad, only adds fuel to the fire.
Benefits Of Conspiracy Theories
As well as attention and drama, there’s other benefits for conspiracy theorist narcissists. They may gather a following who hang on their every word. Making them feel important and influential. And what narcissist wouldn’t want that?
They may even earn money and fame, if they post videos and write articles. If you look at some popular conspiracy theorists, many display narcissistic traits. They’re usually charismatic and convincing. And love the limelight. Does this sound familiar?!
Of course, narcissist conspiracy theorists claim they’re helping others. And their mission is to save the world. But if you look closely, most of them have multiple income streams coming from the attention they generate.
Narcissist conspiracy theorists have an incentive to invent new and crazier conspiracy theories. Because they gain more attention, which increases their income.
An Excuse For Mediocrity
As you’re probably aware, most narcissists harbour delusions of superiority. And they desperately want to keep them alive.
But their ordinary lives make it difficult to convince themselves and others how great they are. But some conspiracy theories give them an excuse.
If the narcissist believes that a global elite is holding them back. And not allowing their greatness to shine, then it’s a good excuse for their lack of success. And it allows them to continue believing they’re great, despite achieving nothing of note.
Narcissist may also live in hope that one day they’ll crack the code. And break free from the chains of “tyranny”. Which will allow them to take their rightful place amongst the elite.
Narcissists Fake Morality
Some narcissists hide behind religion to create the impression they’re good people. Or they might work in a caring profession, such as nursing. Other narcissists use conspiracy theories for the same purpose.
Like I mentioned earlier, narcissists need attention. And many realise that their narcissistic ways repel people. So they find ways of creating the impression they’re honest caring people by attaching themselves to good causes.
Some narcissist conspiracy theorists claim they’re on a mission to save humanity. As they selflessly try to wake up the world from their slumber. And save them from a life of perpetual slavery.
This not only paints a picture of them being a hero, and attracts people towards them. It also provides a grandiose platform for them to stand on. And wins them fans, attention, power, and more.
