Although narcissists are manipulators, they’re gullible. They have flaws which can be exploited. Even though they may present a strong front.
Narcissists are needy, and manipulators smell their desires. Luring them with fantastical promises that are too good to be true. And stroking their ego to blind them from logic.
So why specifically are narcissists gullible? Here’s a few reasons why narcissists are gullible…

They Badly Want People To Like Them
Narcissists don’t have a true self. They have a fictional self, based on who they WANT to be. And this fictional self needs lots of external validation to stay alive. Which is one reason why narcissists need to be liked so much.
They may treat family and close friends like cr*p. But narcissists often go above and beyond for casual acquaintances. The less well they know them, the more they seek their approval.
Many narcissists are over generous with casual friends. Paying for drinks, meals etc. And are eager to please.
Narcissists tend to have bellow average emotional intelligence, due to their lack of empathy. So when they want to impress, they err on the side of caution, and act too nice.
Manipulators smell someone who’s eager to please, and take advantage. Knowing they can take what they want, with little resistance.
Magical Thinking
Most narcissists are guilty of magical thinking. They believe that greatness is their destiny, even if they do nothing to achieve it.
This leads many to take huge risks, believing they’ll defy the odds. And there’s no better illustration than gambling.
Many narcissists are addicted to gambling. Even though common sense tells you the odds are stacked in the house’s favour.
Narcissists believe they’re destined for a windfall. Causing many to repeatedly throw away huge sums of money. And when they keep losing, they pay for special “systems” that “guarantee” a win.
Narcissists magical thinking makes them more likely to fall for empty promises offering huge rewards. Because they want them so badly, and believe they’re entitled.
Scams
Not only are they suckers for gambling, narcissists may also fall for online scams. Believing African royalty are itching to send them their fortune. Or someone a fraction their age yearns to fly half way across the globe to marry them.
Narcissists are often taken in by conspiracy theorists. Who make them feel special by calling them “woke”. And charge them monthly fees for “inside information”.
Narcissists also fall for clairvoyants, mediums, and other fortune tellers. Who dangle carrots of exciting futures, if only their palms are crossed with silver.
Narcissists are seduced by the possibility that something great will happen. And can’t resist playing along. Because they don’t want the fairy tale to end.
Some times they know deep down they’re being played. But don’t want the fantasy to end. Which is why scammers may rinse them multiple times.
Suckers For Compliments
Most narcissists are suckers for compliments. Their delusions of superiority need almost constant affirmation. So when they’re complimented, their emotional bliss blinds them from reality.
Narcissists are unwilling to admit they’ve received an insincere compliment. Instead choosing to believe that person sees their magnificence. And this makes them a salesman’s dream.
A salesman can throw lines like these to close a deal with a narcissist…
“Someone of your standing deserves the best”
“Someone of your intelligence understands the need for quality”
“This is suitable for top professionals like yourself”
Narcissists believe they’re superior. And see no reason to suspect someone is buttering them up. Which is why some wholeheartedly believe a model half their age finds their old sagging frame so wonderfully attractive.
Lured By “Special Treatment”
Narcissists expect special treatment. Not because they’ve done anything to deserve it. But because they believe it’s their birth right. When someone offers the illusion of special treatment, the narcissist is putty in their hands.
A casino might give them a “special tab”, knowing they’ll spend more. And even send drivers to pick them up. Bringing them in to shake the gold coins from their pockets.
The managers make a point to remember their names. And tell them how great they’re looking. The narcissist laps it up, and flashes the cash.
Narcissists may pay extra to be seen in VIP areas. So the world knows how special they are. And prance around so as many people as possible see them.
I once knew a narcissist who declared himself bankrupt. It turns out he thought he was “seeing” a high class hooker. And said she’d sometimes see him for free. But clearly she got her pound of flesh.
Image Driven
Narcissists are usually image driven. And focus more on appearing successful than actually being a success.
This causes some to spend a fortune on designer labels they can’t afford. Expensive cars that leave a hole in their finances. And many other things they can’t realistically afford.
It also causes some to fall for trophy husbands and wives. And proudly show off their beautiful young flames. Whilst being mercilessly rinsed in a loveless marriage. Living with the threat of losing half their fortune.
Narcissists are suckers for anything that promises to make them look good. And gullible enough to plunge into financial strife for their image. Because they falsely believe that everyone’s watching, and everybody cares.
Cosmetic Surgery
How many attractive narcissists faces and bodies are ruined by expensive cosmetic surgeries? Instead of turning back the clock, they regress through evolutionary stages. Looking more like lizards, dinosaurs, and ducks.
A little work is all good and well. But some narcissists take it too far. Flaunting unnatural appearances, which in some circles are beginning to be considered “normal”.
Narcissists are blinded by the choices they make. Unwilling or unable to admit they screwed up. And usual plan their next surgery soon after their last. Despite the dubious results.
Titles
Narcissists LOVE important titles. And can be suckered into doing almost anything if they’re given a prestigious label. Many narcissists happily take on more responsibility at work if a fancy title is on offer. Even with no financial incentive.
Cunning employers wanting to off load responsibility give titles instead of cash. And narcissists lap them up.
The narcissist is blinded to the fact that they’re doing more work for the same pay. Happily strutting around with the name tag “Stationary Officer”, or some other made up title. Nail a gold plaque to their office door and they’re a slave for life!
Final Thoughts
Although they’re manipulators, narcissists are gullible. Their egocentricity ensures they don’t see the bigger picture. Blinded by their need for attention and adoration.
Narcissists feel entitled to the good life. And expect huge slices of luck to achieve it. Which makes them susceptible to manipulations that promise the Earth.
Perhaps their biggest weakness is that they over estimate their own intelligence, and under estimate everyone’s else’s. Which breeds complacency. Because the narcissist can’t believe anyone’s clever enough to fool them.
Narcissists naively search for short cuts to success. And as you and I know, there’s a queue of people offering this. As long as you pay the price.
As Homer Simpson once said, “I’m sick of these get rich quick schemes. I just want a scheme that helps me get rich… and quick!”
