To kick off this blog, what better way to start than with a discussion on what narcissism is?!
Most people know narcissism as a description of someone who loves themselves. Whilst this is true, there’s MUCH more to it than that.
Narcissism is a spectrum, and we’re ALL on it. Everyone has to be a bit selfish at times. It’s healthy to be selfish to a certain degree.
But some people are more selfish than others. I’m sure you’ve met some over the years!
But that doesn’t mean they are necessarily a narcissist. At least not to the level of a medically defined one.
Medically, a narcissist is known to have Narcissistic Personality disorder (NPD). And they have these following traits…
Please Check Out This Short Video To Aid Your Understanding…
- An exaggerated sense of self importance. They believe they are special, better than everyone else, and deserve special treatment.
- Need almost constant attention and admiration. Narcissists HATE spending time alone. And they often fish for compliments. Narcissists often brag about past accomplishments, whether they’re true or not.
- See people as commodities to get what they want. They can be manipulative and exploitative. Narcissists fail to recognise that others have their own wants and needs.
- Narcissists have little emotional empathy. But they can learn logical empathy. They may know that someone will be upset during a bereavement. And learn how they should respond. But they don’t feel your pain. So they can be clumsy, especially in less obvious circumstances.
- Have preoccupations of being “perfect”. So they rarely admit they’re wrong.
- Narcissists struggle handling criticism. And can be hyper defensive when criticised. They sometimes see criticism when none is given!
Narcissists are difficult to be around. They are draining with their demands. And give little back in return. They often like to big themselves up, whilst subtly putting others down. You can feel like you’re walking on egg shells around them.
Many people recognise that something doesn’t quite feel right about them. But when you don’t know about narcissism, it can be difficult to put your finger on it.
These are just a few of the traits of a narcissist. And there’s MANY more. Narcissists have many fairly predictable patterns. Once you learn them, you can more easily spot a narcissist. And you can see through their manipulative ways. Keep reading and learning!
